The reason I’m saying this is because Idul Fitri is in two months, and you know how things are during Ramadhan. People gather and spend a lot of times together to pass the special month. It’s a communal thing here. And it’s a bit worrisome in so many aspect. First, if we are picking the rate every other country is going, we’ll be peaking up in cases exactly at Ramadhan. I couldn’t imagine the health workers having to work even more intense when they also have to fast.
Another angle is the communal aspect of Ramadhan here. Even if you’re not observing it, you’d celebrate it. It’s basically festivity in the air for the whole month. You wake up early for sahur with your family – or friends if you don’t live with your family, you wait the day pass with friends at office or schools or anywhere you are, you have fast-breaking events, school and working hours adjust their timing, and of course the taraweh prayers every night. It’s hard to imagine that many people would have to do it alone and quiet this year. I guess no one would want it to happen this way. But seeing how things are right now, it does seem unavoidable.
